Marking the 50th anniversary of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, an interview with Bob Avakian, Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party: The Cultural Revolution in China...Art and Culture...Dissent and Ferment...and Carrying Forward the Revolution Toward Communism.

May 2016 marks 50 years since Mao Zedong launched the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in China. The Cultural Revolution was a breakthrough in dealing with a world historic problem of communist revolution -- how to prevent counterrevolution under socialism, in a way that enables the masses of people to play a decisive role in revolutionizing all of society and transforming their thinking and values in the process.

Fifty years later, it still inspires anybody who aspires to a liberating society. At the same time, it still infuriates the representatives of the old order and all who fear the upheaval involved in actually ridding the world of exploitation and oppression. Already, there have been publications, symposiums, programs, etc. attacking the Cultural Revolution with gross distortions and lies, and we anticipate more over the coming year.

Bob Avakian is the Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party. Because of the work he has done over several decades, summing up the positive and negative experience of the communist revolution so far, and drawing from a broad range of human experience, there is a new synthesis of communism that has been brought forward -- a qualitative advance in the scientific approach to making revolution and emancipating humanity. There really is a viable vision and strategy for a radically new, and much better, society and world. And there is the crucial leadership that is needed to carry forward the struggle toward that goal.

This interview was first aired in 2005.
